DRILLING RIGS

Posted - 7 April 2020

In 2019, there was an estimate of more than 95 million barrels of oil being used daily around the world. This amount of unprocessed oil is derived from the underground and later processed. Following this process enables oil to be delivered to various filling stations around the world. Due to the importance of oil in the world's economy, a lot of oil companies around the world are always searching for more oil reserves, which will enable them to meet up with the demand. Research shows that among the world's oil reserves, 13% of them are stuck underneath the ocean. This estimate was taken from the North Pole only. Now, when we take a thorough look at the world in general, 85% of non-renewable oils can be found underneath the floors of the oceans. What is the solution to removing these oils? Drilling Rigs and Platforms help take out the carbon fuels found underneath the ocean floors before they are processed.

How Oil Drilling Platforms are developed

In 1897, the first oil-drilling platform was built in California, USA, and can now be found in various parts of the world today. Over the years, several oil companies have come together to invest in technologies that can enhance the speed of oil drilling from the ocean.  Then in 1928, one Texas-based company mounted a mobile oil platform in a land covered with water in between Louisiana and Texas. In 1947, different oil companies formed a group to construct an oil platform in Mexico. This platform was the first developed in such a way that it cannot be seen from land except underneath the ocean.

How can oil Companies Find Oil under Water?

Before any company can find the location of oil under the oceans, sniffer equipment has to be used. With this equipment, the company can be able to collect seawater samples and determine whether the water contains some amount of natural gas or oil in it. If the company can find anything in the water, then a survey will be done on that very seafloor by researchers to be certain if there is something strange in the water. During the survey, the researchers can still make use of seismic surveying. This system of surveying helps to send shockwaves through the floor of the sea and will use a hydrophone to listen to how the waves return. By the time the researchers discover that there is oil under the sea, they will pass the information to that oil company, and then, they can begin the offshore drilling.

The installation of offshore oil platforms

When a company finds an oil reserve under the water, the first thing they do is install exploratory wells. About two to three months will be required to install a well, and these wells are being used to collect different rock layer samples that are under the water. If the survey results of the samples are accurate, companies will be able to determine the right place where the production wells can be drilled. Offshore oil platforms are being derived from production wells, and the platforms are installed for running them. As soon as they have gotten the exact production well location, engineers will begin to make plans of how they can put the oil well (offshore) on the top of it.
